Story: This is my first high country image of 2014. I spent 2 days waiting for the right conditions in Cheam Meadow and finally, they emerged. Spoon Lake is a tiny pond below Lady Peak just a few miles as the crow flies from my home. The lake is in this semi-thawed condition for about 3 days a year! This is the first time in the 15 years I have been trying to photograph the lake that the snow conditions and light have come together.
I made this image at around 9 pm on June 29th. I would guess it was about 4 degrees C at the time. Just me and the resident Black Bear watched as the mountain glowed in the setting sun.

Details: This is two focus-stacked images combined. Both images were made at f8 within a few seconds of each other and then combined in CS 6 using the "auto-align" tool. The weather was overcast and the peak enveloped in cloud until only 10 minutes before this image was made. In just 15 minutes, the sky went from fully overcast with the peak shrouded in cloud to an almost cloudless sky.
Technical Details: 2 exposures, Nikon D800E, Nikon 14-24, f2.8 at f8 and 14mm. Both images were made with a tripod and cable release. For large prints, a focus-stacked version was made. The focus-stacked images are shown here but on the web at this size it is impossible to distinguish the focus stacked image from the single image.
