Story: Around this time of year, the high country becomes accessible. In just 2 weeks, the last snow will melt at the tree-line and alpine meadows will begin to emerge from under 8 months of snow. Each year, I wait anxiously for this time. For me, it's a time of renewal, when, after a long wait, the high country calls again.
I made these two images last year in early July in a meadow near my home in Chilliwack, BC. This year, the snow melt is about 1 week early, so it should only be 2 weeks or so before I can photograph again in Cheam Meadow.....

Details: In both images, there is unusual color in the melting snow. The color comes from algae that grows on melting snow in the late spring. Here, the snow was about 3 feet deep and would last about another week in the early summer warmth. In just 1 month, the entire area covered by snow here will be full of lupine and paintbrush.
Technical Details: Both images: 1 exposure, Nikon D800E, Nikon 14-24, f2.8. Both images were made with a tripod and cable release. For large prints, a focus-stacked version was made of each image. The non-focus-stacked images are shown here.
